Malaysia tourism: General Information

Malaysia is a multi religious/multi ethnic federation of thirteen
States in southeast Asia. The country belongs to the top of the
most developed countries in the world.
Geographically, Malaysia is devided in west (Peninsular) and east
(Borneo) Malaysia, with the South China Sea in between.
West Malaysia is made of nine sultanates, two States and two
federal parts.Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang,
Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Terengganu are sultanates, Kuala Lumpur
and Putrajaya belong to the federal territories with Putrajaya as a
new administrative center. Melaka (malacca) and Penang are under
governors'administration.
East Malaysia (Malaysian Borneo) is situated on the northern part
of Borneo. It is made of three parts, Sabah and Sarawak as States
and Labuan, under federal administration.
Malaysia became independent of the British rule in 1957, under the
name: Persekutuan Tanah Melayu (federation of Malaya).
In 1963, the country officialy changed the name into Malaysia, 14
state federation, including Singapore.
Since 1965, Singapore became an independent country.
The Malaysian Monarchy
His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong is the head of the country.
Nine States within Peninsular Malaysia are ruled by Sultans
hereditary while Melaka, Pulau Pinang, Sabah and Sarawak are ruled
by Governors i.e 'Tuan Yang Terutama'. A rational system is adopted
among the nine Sultans whereby the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong is elected
to the throne for a five year term from one of the nine rulers.the
system of electoral monarchy is making malaysia probably the only
truly democratic monarchy in the world. |
The Government
Democratic system of Government under a Constitutional Monarchy.
The power to govern is vested by the Constitution on His Majesty
the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong but is exercised by a Cabinet of
Ministers headed by the Prime Minister and his Deputy |
Currency
The local Currency is in 'ringgit malaysia'.
Currency notes are in denominations of rm1, rm2, rm5, rm10, rm50,
rm100.
Credit cards are accepted in most parts of Malaysia.
Traveller's Cheques may be changed at Commercial Banks, Hotels and
Authorised Money Changers.

Monday to Friday - 10am-3pm
Saturdays - 9.30am-11.30am |
Infrastructure
Malaysia has an excellent Infrastructure within the country. Land,
air and sea transportation are well coordinated. |
Law
Malaysia takes a serious view on drug traffickers. Those who caught
trafficking drugs will be given the mandatory death
sentence. |
